UFC 198 Preview

Tonight sees the UFC’s biggest ever event in Brazil. UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil is going to be the highest attendance of all UFC events held in the country. It will be held at Arena da Baixada, the home of local football team Atletico Paranaense. The stadium was used in the 2014 World Cup. It can hold over 42,000 fans.

The event is set for a massive celebration of Brazilian MMA, with 11 ‘Brazil vs the World’ fights. As it currently stands, the record for Brazilians vs the world on home soil is 132 – 74. So if records are anything to go by, tonights fights should go more in the way of Brazilian victory. However, there are many fighters who will have something to say about that.

The card sees some of the biggest names in Brazilian MMA come home for this incredible card which is surely likely to get the passionate home crowd off their feet and very vocal in support of their fighters. One name that will not be taking part this weekend is the Brazilian legend and possibly one of the greatest ever MMA fighters ever, Anderson Silva. He was scheduled to face the exciting prospect Uriah Hall in an explosive Muay Thai battle, but the Spider had to pull out earlier this week due to surgery to remove his gall bladder. The loss of this fight is undoubtedly a disappointment to fans, as the fight had potential to be a real classic between Silva who is currently  4 fights without a win since being dethroned by Chris Weidman 3 years ago, and Uriah ‘Primetime’ Hall, the TUF17 runner up who idolises Silva. But we’ll just have to wait for that fight to come around again hopefully.

The main event of the night is for the World Heavyweight Title between Brazilian Champion Fabricio Werdum and Croatian brawler Stipe Miocic. This will be Werdum’s first outright defence of his title since winning his unification fight against Cain Velasquez last year. This fight was originally penned for February this year, but Werdum pulled out through injury. Looking at the match up between these two fighters, it would seem Werdum has a much wider arsenal of attacks to take Miocic down with, including his dangerous clinch and long range striking to his incredible ground game whereas Miocic is famed more for his ability to trade at short range and isn’t as renowned for his BJJ and Wrestling as Werdum.

Another fight that captures the attention of MMA fans will be the UFC debut of Cris Cyborg against Leslie Smith. Cyborg is a famed Women’s fighter who has always been linked with a super fight vs Ronda Rousey, but due to many reasons a fight has not yet been taken. Could this be her first step towards a fight with Ronda Rousey later this year at Madison Square Gardens in  New York?
